Norfolk Island is a self governing Australian Territory located in the South Pacific about 1,600km northeast to Sydney, 900 km northeast to Lord Howe Island and 1,100km north-west to Auckland. It is about 8 km long and 5 km wide with an area of about
35 square km.
Half of its inhabitants are direct descendants of mutineers of a British naval ship, Bounty, and their Tahitian wives, who moved to Norfolk Island from Pitcairn Island because of overcrowding. The island's fascinating history is very important to the local population. Its natural attractions include
Shenandoah Cannon,
rainforest, and stands of giant Norfolk Island Pine.
